Pet Sitter’s Code of Practice

  1. I will always endeavour to provide a professional, ethical business which is governed by honourable standards.
  2. I will provide conscientious care for the pets entrusted to me at all times and will place their welfare above all other business considerations.
  3. I understand that the pet’s welfare health and safety is paramount and will work with integrity at all times.
  4. I will ensure that I am familiar with the welfare needs of the species in my care and will take all reasonable steps to meet the needs of each individual pet on my care at all times, including during transportation.
  5. I will discuss the needs of individual pets with the clients in advance and will follow the instructions given by the client, unless they would cause unnecessary suffering to the pet.
  6. I will not act in any way or place the pets in any situation that could cause poor welfare, suffering or distress.
  7. I understand that it is my obligation to my clients to be honest and transparent.
  8. I will report any concerns about the health, behaviour or welfare of the pet to the client in a timely manner.
  9. I will respect the confidence of every customer served and treat my clients in a courteous manner.
  10. I will avoid misrepresentation of my services.
  11. I will learn more about my profession and improve my services when the opportunity arises.
  12. I will avoid unfair competitive practices, any slander or defamation of my competitors, and actions or business practices which would result in dishonour upon or distrust of my competitors or of the pet care services industry in general.
  13. I will be respectful of, and cooperate with other professions and trades which operate within the pet industry, in every way consistent with my other responsibilities.
  14. I will encourage responsible pet ownership, and promote, especially through the charitable programs of SPCA, an increased awareness and acceptance of animal protection programs.
  15. I will not offer advice on, or conduct any training or behaviour modification unless I have the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience, and am accredited by or a member of an appropriate body. I will always obtain the client’s express permission.
